The East-West Gateway July Map of the Month depicts workers who commute by walking, riding a bike, or taking public transit. The Census and the American Community Survey record the means by which workers commute to work. Dots on the map are randomly dispersed throughout their corresponding census tract and each dot represents 5 workers.
In the EWG region, of the 1,288,964 people in the workforce (including those who work from home), 42,633 people commute to work by walking, riding a bike, or taking public transit. The majority of these workers live in the city of St. Louis (17,137), St. Louis County (15,062), St. Clair County (4,178), and Madison County (2,327). The number of these types of commuters who live in the other counties of the EWG region are: St. Charles (1,787), Jefferson (1,077), Franklin (812), and Monroe (253). Residents in the city of St. Louis make up the largest percentages of regional workers who use transit (45.2%) and workers who bike (55.11%). Residents in St. Louis County make up the largest percent of workers who walk to work (34.7%). Not many of these commuters live in Monroe County, where the residents account for the smallest proportions of regional workers who walk (1.2%), use transit (0.1%) and bike to work (0%).
