East-West Gateway’s November 2023 Map of the Month depicts tree canopy cover in the EWG region. The source is Landsat satellite imagery for 2021. Each 30 meter by 30 meter cell has a value representing the percentage of land that is covered by tree leaves, needles, branches and stems. Jefferson County has the highest average tree canopy cover at 54.5%, followed by Franklin County at 43.2%. The city of St. Louis had the lowest average canopy at 10%. Regionally, mean tree canopy cover was 31.1% in 2021. Maps such as this enable stakeholders to identify areas where tree canopy enhancement may be beneficial.
