East-West Gateway’s September 2021 Map of the Month depicts population change from 2010 to 2020. In the 8-county East-West Gateway region, population increased from 2,571,253 to 2,600,607, a gain of 29,354. The strongest growth was in western St. Charles County. Growth was also evident in the central third of the counties of Madison and St. Clair. Monroe County continued to experience robust growth, particularly around Columbia and Waterloo. Corridors such as Route 47 in Franklin County, and I-55 in Jefferson County, also attracted new residents. Unlike the previous census, the 2020 enumeration showed increasing population throughout south St. Louis County within the I-270 loop. Population decline continued in the city of St. Louis, but at the lowest rate since the 1950s. In the city of St. Louis, the central corridor grew rapidly, and pockets of growth were evident in several neighborhoods, including Vandeventer, Lewis Place, Benton Park, and Shaw. The St. Louis MSA continues slow population gain with a 1.2% increase from 2010 to 2020. The percent change is lower than that of the country as a whole, the peer region average, and all but three of the peer regions.
