East-West Gateway’s December 2021 Map of the Month depicts race and ethnicity in the St. Louis region, according to recently released 2020 U.S. Census data. People who identify as White and not Hispanic make up 68.7 percent of the regional population, while the population that identifies as Black and not Hispanic represents 19.2 percent. The next largest population group in 2020 is the 4.6 percent of the population that identifies as multiracial. Individuals who identify as Hispanic or Latino make up 3.9 percent of the regional population and those who identify as Asian and not Hispanic account for 3.1 percent. Compared to most other large regions, St. Louis has relatively few people of Asian and Hispanic origin. Even so, these groups are important to the population growth of the region. The number of individuals who identify as Hispanic or Latino increased by more than 30,000 between 2010 and 2020, while those who identify as Asian increased by more than 20,000. The eight-county region as a whole grew by 29,000 people.
