East-West Gateway’s April 2021 Map of the Month depicts the average number of persons per household, by census block group, for the St. Louis region. In 2019, there were an average of 2.4 persons per household for the 1,045,304 households in the St. Louis eight-county region. On average, households have fewer people in the core of the region and more persons per household in the outlying areas of the region. Among the eight counties, the average household size is smallest in the city of St. Louis where there is an average of 2.1 persons per household. The counties with the largest average household size are St. Charles and Jefferson where there are averages of 2.6 persons per household. Of the 1,824 block groups in the region, 28 have an average household size of more than 3.5 persons and 314 have fewer than 2. The highest average household size is 4.7 persons and the lowest is 1.1 persons.
