East-West Gateway’s May 2020 Map of the Month depicts the percentages of owner- and renter-occupied housing units by census tract. About 68% of the households within the East-West Gateway region are owner-occupied, and about 32% are renter-occupied. Generally, the overall pattern for the region is the highest percentages of renter-occupied housing in the center with increasing percentages of owner-occupied housing as you move away from the core. The census tracts with the highest percentages of renter-occupied housing units are in the central corridor of the city of St. Louis and around Scott Air Force Base. Tracts in yellow have about 40-60% of housing in each category — owner- and renter-occupied. These areas, with a mix of housing, are more prevalent in the outer part of the city of St. Louis and the northern portion of St. Louis County as well as in some inner core areas of the counties in Illinois.
