East-West Gateway’s September 2023 Map of the Month shows the change in total housing units from 2020 to July 20, 2023. The map is based on the net change in housing units by Census Block, with dots randomly distributed within a block. Red dots indicate a net decrease in the number of housing units. This may be due to demolitions, or to the conversion of multi-family buildings into single family dwellings. Black dots indicate a net increase in housing units. An increase in the number of housing units does not necessarily imply an increase in population, as units may be vacant, or household sizes may be declining. From 2020 to 2023, the 8-county East-West Gateway region added a net of 12,232 housing units. Franklin and Monroe counties experienced the largest percentage increases (2.24%) in housing units while the largest number of units was added in St. Louis County (4,987).
