The December map of the month shows the residential location of people who have moved into the St. Louis region, with red dots representing people who moved from elsewhere in the United States, and blue dots showing individuals who moved to St. Louis from abroad. The American Community Survey (ACS) asks residents of metropolitan areas whether they have moved into the region in the last year. The source for this map is the 5-year ACS, which represents an average of responses for the period of 2019 to 2023. In any given month in this period, there were an estimated average of 73,666 residents who had moved into the region within the previous year.
St. Louis County had the largest number of newcomers, with an estimated average of 27,935. The city of St. Louis and St. Charles County each had an estimated average of about 11,200. Driven primarily by Scott Air Force Base, St. Clair County had an estimated average of 9,245 recent migrants. The estimated number of recent migrants in the other counties were: Madison, 6,272; Jefferson, 4,398; Franklin, 2,954; and Monroe, 463. Clusters of recent migrants, particularly international migrants, can be seen around colleges and universities, including Washington University, St. Louis University, Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, and Lindenwood University.
