East-West Gateway’s April 2023 Map of the Month depicts ownership of dams in the East-West Gateway region as recorded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the National Inventory of Dams (NID), 2022 database. USACE is responsible for maintaining the NID and works in collaboration with federal dam regulating agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and federal and state dam regulating agencies, to obtain accurate and complete information about dams in the database.
In addition to ownership, the database contains more than 70 data fields including information about a dam’s location, type, size, purpose, and its uses and benefits. The EWG region has 597 dams, of which 3 are federally owned, 22 are state owned, 23 are owned by a local government, 9 are owned by a public utility, and 539 are privately owned. The county with the most dams is Franklin, Missouri with 150 or 25.13% of all dams in the region. The county (excluding the city of St. Louis) with the fewest dams is St. Louis County, Missouri with 48 or 8.04% of all dams in the region.
