East-West Gateway’s July 2021 Map of the Month depicts change in total population from 2010 to 2020 for all counties in the 48 contiguous states. Overall, the U.S. population grew by 20.2 million people (6.5%) according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. The population in the Midwest grew by 2%, a growth that is higher than in the Northeast states (0.8%) but substantially less than in the Southern (10.3%) and Western (9.1%) states. The St Louis region as a whole experienced a slight growth (0.4%) in population. Among the counties in the East-West Gateway region, the city of St. Louis (-6.8%) and St. Clair County (-4.6%) both saw population losses while St. Charles County (12.3%) and Monroe County (5.1%) experienced the largest gains in population.
