East-West Gateway’s June 2021 Map of the Month depicts the condition of locally maintained bridges in the East-West Gateway region for 2020. Of the 1,624 bridges maintained by counties, cities and other local agencies within the region, 705 are considered to be in good condition and 793 in fair condition, 43 percent and 49 percent, respectively. The remainder of the bridges (126 bridges, 8 percent of the total) are in poor condition. Bridge condition is defined in accordance with the Pavement and Bridge Condition Performance Measures final rule, published by the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) in January of 2017. The rating a bridge receives is based on the condition of the deck, superstructure, substructure, and culvert. Bridges that are rated as poor are not necessarily unsafe. Unsafe bridges are closed.
