School is back in session. East-West Gateway Council of Governments urgently wants your help in getting the word out about roadway safety for students, parents, and new drivers going to and from school, practices, and school-year activities.
On Thursday, August 29, EWG will launch a Street Smarts for Student Safety social media campaign. EWG is looking to partner with regional school districts, local governments, and others on the campaign to remind parents and students to take care, be safe, and be aware about the risks of school day commutes.
Partners will have access to a social media toolkit with seven social media graphics and posts that provide safety stats and tips aimed at keeping students drivers, student walkers, bus riders, parents, and others safe on the roads. The first post will run on Aug. 29, and partners are asked use the rest of the posts over a six week period.
Statistics in EWG’s recent Gateway to Safer Roadways plan, finds that drivers 25 and under are most at risk for serious and fatal crashes. In some neighborhoods, crashes involving pedestrians are alarmingly high, so it’s important that students walking to the school or the bus stop take precautions. And, the report finds that dusk, a high travel time for students, parents, and commuters, is the most common time of the day for serious crashes.
Please join us in the effort to improve roadway safety and drastically reduce serious and fatal crashes in the St. Louis region by participating in the plan. Email Nancy.Cambria@ewgateway.org if you would like to participate so we can send you a link to the toolkit, reminders, and updates.
Best of luck to all the students, teachers, staff, and administrators as they kick off another school year! Have fun, learn a lot, and stay safe!
