East-West Gateway’s August 2020 Map of the Month depicts the boundaries of watersheds within the East-West Gateway region at the subbasin and subwatershed level as defined by the USGS hydrologic unit delineation method. A watershed is a land area that drains to one stream, lake or river, which affects the water quality in the water body that it surrounds. Hydrologic units are intended to capture watersheds but also account for other areas the USGS describes as “remnant, noncontributing and diverted”. There are nine subbasin and 176 subwatershed hydrologic units in the region.
