East-West Gateway’s July 2020 Map of the Month depicts the number of people aged 18 to 24 who moved to the St. Louis region from other U.S. counties and the number who moved away from the St. Louis region between 2014 and 2018. The most popular counties for these young adults to move to are those with large universities, including the Missouri areas of Columbia and Springfield; Champaign, Illinois; and Lawrence, Kansas. Large numbers of residents also moved to New York, Los Angeles, and Kansas City. Young adults were most likely to move to St. Louis from other areas of Illinois, including Chicago and Springfield. Overall, between 2014 and 2018, St. Louis gained 17,631 residents aged 18 to 24, but lost 28,355, for a net loss of 10,724.
