East-West Gateway’s August 2019 Map of the Month depicts the change in land cover type from 2001 to 2016 using the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD). The NLCD land cover types have been reclassified by East-West Gateway as developed and undeveloped. Within the East-West Gateway region, about 1.6% of land changed from undeveloped to developed during the 2001 to 2016 period, resulting in about 23% of land being developed in 2016. St. Charles, St. Clair and St. Louis counties experienced the most change during this period, with 2.1% to 3.2% of land changing from undeveloped to developed in each county. This NLCD dataset is 30-meter resolution and is best used for monitoring change over large areas. Go to https://www.mrlc.gov to download your own NLCD data.
