East-West Gateway’s September 2018 Map of the Month depicts the Level IV Ecoregions, as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that are within the East-West Gateway region. The ecoregions on this map are based on the premise that ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of patterns of biotic and abiotic phenomena, including geology, physiography, vegetation, climate, soils, land use, wildlife, and hydrology. These general purpose regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across federal agencies, state agencies, and nongovernment organizations. Level IV data is the finest grain national data available from the EPA. Learn more at https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ecoregions
